The Scottish Government is facing a significant challenge to increase the number of people working in GP surgeries, says the public spending watchdog.

But an ageing clinical workforce and problems with recruitment and retention will make it difficult for the government to meet its target of 800 new GPs. A report by the Auditor General for the Scottish Parliament says the service's revenue budget reduced by 12.5 per cent in real terms between 2014/15 and 2018/19, from £394.7 million to £345.2 million, while its costs are rising.

Her initial four-year appointment as Deputy Chair will run from 1 August 2019 until 31 July 2023.
